Jim Murphy MP for East Renfrewshire and Secretary of State for Scotland, has announced that the planned new bridge for the Forth adjacent to the Prime Minister’s constituency in Fife will go ahead. It will cost £2.3 billion. Every penny will be paid out of the public purse. No tolls will be charged. The citizens of Edinburgh which contains the constituency of Alistair Darling Chancellor of the Exchequer and which will benefit directly and those of Kirkaldy and Cowdenbeath which borders the Forth and is the constituency of Gordon Brown will not have to contribute a penny. But in England? The new Mersey bridge between Lancashire and Cheshire which is also going to be built will not be paid out of the public purse at all. It will be paid for in its entirety through toll charges. It will be paid for in its entirety by the tolls to be imposed on everyone using the new Mersey crossing. Mainly of course the people of both English counties and the people of England’s North West in general.
‘The injustice doesn’t stop there,’ Michael Knowles head of the media unit for the Campaign for an English Parliament has stated in his May message to CEP members. ‘The Brown-Darling government has invoked the one and the same Barnett Formula to justify the expenditure in the one case and to refuse it in the other. How they can do it is beyond comprehension but obviously their attachment to their own country of Scotland is ruthless. Every citizen of Scotland, man, women and child, receives £1600 more per annum in social expenditure than people in England. And that is before there is added in the immense benefits gong to Scotland through the Devolution block grant.
‘It is about time England’s MPs got off their backsides and stood up for England,’ stated Knowles. ‘They know the score perfectly well. They know that no bridge or road of any sort in Scotland charges tolls any longer, while throughout England tolls are charged, like the Humber Bridge, both bridges across the Severn, the Dartford Crossing and the North Birmingham M6 relief road. England’s MPs know all about the injustice of the Barnett Formula, about Scotland’s students not paying top-up fees, the freeze in Scotland on the council tax, no hospital parking charges and soon no prescription charges either. So basically the problem the people of England have is not just with a perverse constitutional system that favours Scotland at England’s expense. Our problem is also with our MPs.’

We must not forget that it is the British that are denying England its political recognition, the British MPs we have sent to parliament to represent England, it is these who are to blame. Until we have our own English MPs not British MPs representing England nothing is going to change.
